The Early Childhood Collaborative of Southington is holding this free workshop for parents and childcare providers of preschoolers.  Register now.

The lack of fine motor skills is one of the biggest issues that the Southington elementary school principals are seeing with children entering Kindergarten. Fine motor skills is the coordination of small muscle movements—usually involving the synchronization of hands and fingers—with the eyes. These skills are utilized in Kindergarten through writing, cutting with scissors, artwork and other projects. When child don’t have the muscle strength or coordination to do these activities, they struggle and become frustrated.

The speaker will be Sue Spatafore, an Occupational Therapist for the Southington Public Schools.

Attendees will learn:

  • What fine motor skills are and how they develop in young children
  • Why there has been a decline in manual dexterity in preschool students over the last decade
  • Techniques and fun activities that can be done to support fine motor skill development in home and in the classroom

Childcare will be provided for those who register online in advance.

This workshop is part of the ECCS’s “Kindergarten Readiness for Southington’s Young Children” initiative funded by the Bristol Brass General Grant Fund and the Fuller & Myrtle Barnes Fund for Education at the Main Street Community Foundation.
