Gardening 101 Workshop – How to Incorporate the Joys of Gardening into Your Preschool Curriculum

The workshop will be presented by Advanced Master Gardener Christie Kuriger. She describes her background this way: “I have been an educator most of my professional life and raised 4 sons. I have loved to garden since I was about 5 and never stopped. My parents and grandparents helped foster this in me. I was a preschool teacher and director; an elementary school teacher and a school counselor K-12. I took the Master Gardener Class in upstate NY through Cornell and in 2013. I transferred to CT as a Master Gardener in 2016 and became an Advanced Master Gardener in 2017. I recently retired from a position at Agway in their garden center and continue to work as the Gardens and Grounds Coordinator at the Mark Twain House. I also volunteer to coordinate the gardening at the Common Good Garden that helps to feed folks in Southington.”
The presentation will cover:
- Benefits of children gardening
- Introduce gardening with a story
- Looking inside of a seed
- How plants grow; what they need to live
- Activities/lessons for young children in the garden
Attendees will plant their own seeds to take home and will receive a hand-out of resources that will include sample lessons and a bibliography of children’s books. Funding was also received to give Southington providers gardening supplies, so please register ASAP so we can shop for what your center/school/FCC home needs.

Time: Registration at 6 pm, workshop from 6:30 to 8 pm.
Snacks will be provided.
Certificates of attendance will be provided.
This is a hands-on class so please be prepared to be outside in the garden and bring a folding chair and bug spray. The garden may be muddy so wear closed toed shoes and clothes that can get dirty.
St. Paul’s Common Good Garden is located between St. Paul’s Church and Bread for Life.
Parking is available along Vermont Ave, at Bread for Life or in the large lot across Main Street.
